20 youths handed over job letters, 57 persons awarded

Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu unfurled the national flag on the 73rd Independence Day at the Police Lines here yesterday. Deputy Commissioner Isha Kalia and SSP Gaurav Garg were among thosepresent.

The minister told residents of the district to maintain peace and goodwill.

He said under the Sarbat Health Insurance Scheme, being started in the state from August 20, 43.18 lakh families would be insured for Rs 5 lakh per family. Hepatitis C is being treated free of cost by the state government. He inspected the parade after unfurling the national flag and took salute from the march past. Students of various government and aided schools presented Mass PT show and cultural and patriotic presentations. In addition to honouring freedom fighters, the minister also handed over letters of appreciation to 57 personalities with unique achievements. Job letters to 20 youth under the Ghar Ghar Rozgar scheme were presented. Toppers of the Classes X and XII (medical and non-medical) classes of government schools were also honoured by handing over cheques of Rs 10,000 each. Besides, five wheelchairs, five tricycles and 20 sewing machines were provided to the needy.

Freedom fighters remembered

Phagwara: Independence Day was celebrated with great fervour amid tight security in Phagwara, Goraya, Phillaur, Banga and Nakodar.

Freedom fighters who played a vital role in the freedom struggle were remembered on the occasion.

Phagwara ADC Babita Kaler unfurled the Tricolour at a function in Phagwara. SP Phagwara Mandeep Singh and other dignitaries belonging to various political, social and religious organisations attended the function.

A cultural programme was also presented by students of various educational institutions of the region.
