Terming the Union Budget as anti-Punjab and anti-farmer, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Phagwara constituency in-charge, Joginder Singh Mann, has strongly criticised the Modi government for ignoring Punjab’s interests while favouring Bihar. He alleged that despite being a crucial border state, Punjab has again been neglected in the budget.

Mann highlighted that for the past five years, Punjab’s farmers have been demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) and agricultural loan waivers, but the Central Government has overlooked their concerns. He further stated that the budget does not just ignore farmers but is also against labourers and the poor, while corporate houses and the upper middle class seem to be its primary beneficiaries.

“The budget has been designed to serve corporate interests, leaving behind the lower middle class, which constitutes more than half of the population. The proposal to privatise 100 per cent of the insurance sector and more liberalisation measures pose a serious threat to the economy, as corporate dominance is already impacting agriculture, manufacturing and other key sectors,” Mann said.

Criticising the government’s announcement of making income up to Rs 12 lakh tax-free, Mann called it misleading. He pointed out that income of up to Rs 5 lakh was already exempt, and questioned how many people actually earn between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 12 lakh to benefit from this provision.

The AAP leader urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to announce a special package for Punjab in the Union Budget, ensuring that the state’s farmers and labourers get the support they deserve.
