Jalandhar, July 15

On the call of the Pendu Mazdoor Union (PMU) Punjab, the activists of the union gheraoed the Kartarpur police station for three hours on Sunday. None of the administration/police employees were allowed to enter or come out of the police station by the union.

SP (investigation) Balkar Singh reached the spot and taking the demand letter from the activists, assured them that their demands shall be met.

This gherao was held against the attack on Sukhwinder Kaur, along with half a dozen labour activists, who had been struggling for the rights of the landless at the Hansmunda village.

The activists gheraoed the police station to demand the addition of Sections 307, 452 and 295 of the IPC into the case. Activists of various groups and organisations joined the struggle at the police station today.

They said the feudal lords in the villages, along with political leaders, had joined together to deny their rights to Dalit peasants and the landless. They alleged that the big farmers were trying to prevent the landless from getting their rights.

They also added that this nexus was also causing problems in villages. They said if their demands were not met within this week, and the actions of hooliganism against activists were not suspended, then they shall intensify their struggle.

The demands

PMU activists allege that feudal lords as well as some politicians are trying to prevent the landless farmers as well as Dalits from getting their rights.

They want addition of Sections 307, 452 and 295 of the IPC in the case. They also demand the “action of hooliganism” against activists to be suspended.

The activists have decided to intensify their protest if their demands are not met.
