BPEOs, school heads told to assist residents

Nawanshahr, August 18

All block primary education officers (BPEOs), school heads, in charges of senior secondary schools, high schools, middle schools and primary schools in Balachaur- 1, Balachaur -2 and Nawanshahr, which are within the 3-km area of the Sutlej and a canal, have been asked to assist residents of villages, along with the Army and NDRF teams, to save them from floods.

As per the orders of Nawanshahr Deputy Commissioner  Vinay Bublani, the District Education Officer has asked teachers and school in charges to open nearby schools as relief camps while divers, boats, tents, fodder for animals, ration for civilians, medical and veterinary teams have been made available.

DEO (Secondary) Harcharan Singh said the BPEOs had been told to report to their respected offices to take appropriate action to tackle the flood-like situation.

He said as 40,000 cusecs of excessive water had been released from the Bhakra dam today after the rise in water in it due to heavy rains in hilly areas, the water was expected to reach the district by tonight and the Meteorological Department had also issued a warning of heavy rain, up to 120 mm, in the district during the next 72 hours.

“Hence, we are making sure that there should be more and more helping hands to assist the residents in the evacuation process,” he said.
