“The Congress party failed to honour the legacy of Dr BR Ambedkar, but it was upheld by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For 70 years, Ambedkar’s legacy lay forgotten.” This was stated by Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr L Murugan in Jalandhar on Saturday.

The minister also said that the Central government under PM Modi was working as per Ambedkar’s vision and the recent amendment in labour laws was also in keeping with the realisation of this perspective.

The minister made the comment in his address during the “Bharat Gaurav” celebrations of the Maha Parinirvan Diwas of Dr BR Ambedkar in the district. Hosted by former Union Minister and senior party leader Vijay Sampla, the event saw the presence of senior state and district BJP leadership. BJP state working president Ashwani Sharma, Sampla, former MP Sushil Rinku, party leaders KD Bhandari, Rakesh Rathour, Sheetal Angural and Sushil Sharma remained present on the occasion.

While party leaders sang paeans to Dr BR Ambedkar and eulogised his foundational contributions in drafting the Indian Constitution and making India the thriving democracy that it is today, the event also bore regular and repeated reminders to the audience that it was under the current Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi that Ambedkar’s true legacy had been recognised and celebrated. The speeches of the Union Minister, BJP state working president Ashwani Sharma and Vijay Sampla, delved deeply on the issue.

The event started with floral tributes being paid by all leaders at a golden bespectacled bust of Dr BR Ambedkar kept by the stage. Everyone started their speeches with the slogan, “Jai Bhim, Jai Bharat”.

Addressing the audience, Union Minister Dr L Murugan said, “It is impossible for us to understand how much Ambedkar has sacrificed. He was denied equality in the most basic things, yet rose to great heights. He was made to sit separately in school, drink water separately. Yet he rose to be a barrister in London. But this wasn’t his ultimate wish. It was to uplift his brothers and sisters. He drafted the Constitution which is the foundation of the Indian democracy and is celebrated the world over.”

The minister added, “Before 2015, people didn’t know his birthplace, the place of his demise or studies in London. The Prime Minister found, identified and developed these places as Panchteerth. The Congress named places after Nehru and Gandhi. But the PM brought in the Bhim digital app recognising Ambedkar’s economic contributions and gave us the Amebedkar International Centre at Janpath.”

“Ambedkar’s vision of water management also finds an echo in the Jal Jeevan Mission and he was committed to the well-being of labourers. It was in keeping with this that the recent amendments were brought in. It is under this vision of Dr Ambedkar that the government led by the PM operates,” he further added.
