Jalandhar boy Kunwar Maheep Singh has bagged the first position in the district and third in the state in the JEE Main results by getting 99.96 percentile.

The son of a blood transfusion officer (BTO) at the local Civil Hospital and gynaecologist Harmeet Kaur, Kunwar is a student of the St Soldier School.

His father BTO Gagandeep Singh, whose daughter had also made waves in NEET results a couple of years ago, said: “We have always encouraged our children to study. My daughter was carefree but Kunwar is regular in studies.”

Kunwar’s mother also quit her job six months ago to help him in his studies.

Speaking to The Tribune, Kunwar said his regularity in studies and five to six hours of regular studies did wonders for him. While he aims for the Mumbai IIT, Computer Science is his favoured stream of engineering. He is also among the top 30 students of the northwestern region to be selected for the Regional Mathematical Olympiad.

Meanwhile, city-based Usneek Singh has scored 99.87 per cent in the recently-announced results of JEE Main. Usneek is among the nearly 50 students of the city, who have scored above 99 per cent in JEE mains. Naman Sharma, a student of CT Public School, has scored 99.8 per cent in JEE Main.

Speaking to The Tribune, Usneek, who is the son of Jagroop Singh, principal of Mehr Chand Polytechnic College, said engineering had been his passion since childhood.

“Though my father has expertise in engineering, I am thankful to my parents for always giving me freedom in my chosen career path. They have never pressured me to choose a profession only because they liked it. As my own choice, I was fascinated by engineering since childhood,” he said.

Sharing his mantra for studies, Usneek shared: “From the starting of Class XI, I had studied for seven to eight hours a day and the regular hard work has paid off.”

While computer science is his chosen stream of study for the future, he hopes to make it to an IIT. “Either in Delhi or in Mumbai,” he quips.

Fond of reading books and also simultaneously having an eye on the civil services examinations, Usneek said, “I would also like to crack the civil service exam. But my main aim is pursuing engineering in a good institute.”

While reading books and listening to music is his hobby, Usnek also loves to exercise and is a cartoon buff.

Naman Sharma, who scored 99.8 per cent in the JEE main, got 94/120 in maths, 80/120 in chemistry and 77/120 in physics.

He said: “I am fond of studies but then I am also fascinated by sports. It’s an add-on factor for me as my father Rajiv Kumar Sharma is a mathematics teacher and my mother is a social science teacher. They have been quite supportive in cracking the exam along with proper guidance of my school teachers.”

A regular student, Naman studied six to seven hours a day and computer science is his favoured stream too.
