Civic body removes hoardings around martyr’s statue
Following a recent news report that appeared in these columns regarding the alleged disgrace to the statue of martyr Major Raman Dada in the city, the Municipal Corporation has removed all hoardings around the site at Adarsh Nagar.
The news report titled ‘Mayor’s hoardings block martyr’s statue’ had appeared in Jalandhar Tribune on January 26. The reckless way with which the posters bearing congratulatory messages for new Mayor Vaneet Dhir had been put up had annoyed the residents.
The most annoyed was the family of Major Raman Dada, who had got martyred in 1999 in the Operation Rhino. Vishnu Dada, brother of the martyr, said, “It is a common practice for the people to put up illegal hoardings in front of the memorial site of my brother. Time and again we have written to the Municipal Corporation Commissioners asking them to ensure that hoardings are not put around the site. The people of Jalandhar to need to show some respect to the martyrs.” “Earlier, I had sent an email to the Chief Minister, seeking directions in this regard. Thankfully, the officials have acted now and we hope that the advertisers at least leave the sacred spaces of martyrs in the city from next time onwards,” he said.
