Civil Hospital reels under staff crisis

Around 50 pc posts of nurse, doctor vacant/Blood Bank lying closed for two years

Despite tall claims of the government of providing best medical infrastructure in the Civil Hospitals and free of cost lab tests and medicines to patients, the140-bedded Civil Hospital, Phagwara, has been grappling with acute shortage of medical and paramedical staff for the last two years.

During a visit to the hospital, it was found that the Civil Hospital is facing acute shortage of medical, paramedical and nursing staff .

This correspondent observes that the hospital lacks radiologist, anaesthetist, skin specialist and dental surgeon and patients are facing inconvenience.

Even “Blood Bank” of the hospital has been lying non-operational for the last two years.

Senior Medical Officer Dr Parminder Kaur admitted that of the total 24 sanctioned posts of nurses, 12 posts are lying vacant.

The SMO said one staff nurse was deputed in a dialysis unit ward and three were deputed in emergency wing. And only eight staff nurses were available in different wards. The SMO said it was difficult for smooth functioning of the hospital. She had written to the higher authorities to fill the posts of nurse as soon as possible.

The SMO also admitted that 14 posts of medical officers out of the total 31 sanctioned posts were lying vacant.

She said she had repeatedly been writing to the higher authorities to fill the vacant posts of doctor, nurse and para-medical staff for smooth functioning of the hospital.

The eye department of the hospital has no "tonometer" to check the eye pressure of glaucoma patients. Eye surgeon said she had already submitted the requirements before the authorities.

It was observed that 61 posts of medical and para-medical staff out of total 119 sanctioned posts are lying vacant in the Civil Hospital. SMO said around 450 patients were being examined and treated

daily in the Civil Hospital.
