With about 30 million people suffering from coronary artery disease, India will soon have the highest number of cardiovascular disease cases in the world, said Dr HK Bali, Chairman, Cardiac Sciences at Livasa Hospital here.

He said India was already reporting the highest number of heart attacks among men aged above 35 years, while 4.77 million Indians die due to heart diseases annually. At this rate, cardiovascular diseases would be the biggest cause of death and disability in India by the next decade, he said.

Dr Rakesh Sharma, Associate Director, Cardiology, said, “About 30 per cent of the urban population and 15 per cent of the rural population suffer from high blood pressure and heart attacks.”
