JALANDHAR: A couple died of asphyxiation after they inhaled the smoke caused by the ‘angithi’ (traditional brazier) as they forgot to keep it outside their room before sleeping on Thursday night.

A couple died of asphyxiation after they inhaled the smoke caused by the ‘angithi’ (traditional brazier) as they forgot to keep it outside their room before sleeping on Thursday night.

The deceased have been identified as Ranjit and Reeta, both residents of New Suraj Ganj Colony.

Barjinder Singh, Station House Officer, Bhargo Camp police station, said they received information around 9 am on Friday that a couple living in New Suraj Ganj Colony were found dead in their house.

As per the information provided by nearby residents and family members, the couple was absolutely fine on Thursday night and before sleeping, they were watching TV in their bedroom.

The police said the couple was found dead in the morning as they inhaled smoke caused by ‘angithi’ that was burnt near to their bed at night. Family members had to break the door to enter their room.

The victim, Ranjit, was into a marble business and was living with his three children and wife.

Ranjit’s brother and his wife were also living with them. His parents live in Bihar.

The police have initiated proceeding under Section 174 of the CrPC. According to cops, suffocation caused by angithi could be the reason for the death.
