Death by ‘drug overdose’ raises concerns in Phagwara

Drug abuse has once again emerged as a major concern in Phagwara after a suspected drug overdose death was reported from Subhash Nagar Valmiki Mohalla, raising questions about the effectiveness of ongoing anti-drug efforts in the state.

While the state government and the police continue to take action against drug traffickers under the “War Against Drugs” campaign, the latest incident has fuelled doubts among residents.

According to information, a young man reportedly died following a suspected drug overdose in the locality. The incident has triggered strong resentment among residents, who alleged drug peddling has been taking place openly in the area for a long time and that several youths have already fallen prey to addiction.

Locals alleged despite repeated complaints to the authorities, no effective action was taken to curb the illegal drug trade. They also made serious allegations against a local youth, claiming drug-related activities were being carried out from his residence and that a large number of young people frequently visited the house, disturbing the peace and environment of the neighbourhood.

Residents said women and girls in the locality feel unsafe and are finding it difficult to move about freely.

Meanwhile, the youth accused by residents appeared on camera and admitted that he is a drug addict. He stated that a youth identified as Vishal, from Amritsar, had been staying with him and that the two had consumed drugs together. He further claimed that Vishal died after consuming an excessive quantity of drugs.

After receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot, took custody of the body and launched an investigation.

Phagwara SP Madhvi Sharma said the exact cause of death would only be confirmed after the post-mortem examination report is received.

Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora told The Tribune that police had already intensified the “War Against Drugs” campaign and were carrying out search operations. He said the matter was being examined by Phagwara police and that more details could emerge after the autopsy report is received.

The SSP added that investigators are also examining whether the death was caused by a drug overdose or by some other factor.
