Punjab Local Bodies Minister Brahm Mohindra today said decreased sex ratio was a blot on society.

He exhorted doctors to play a proactive role and join hands with the government to eliminate female foeticide from the state.

Presiding over a workshop organised by the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association, Punjab, in association with Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan at Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences, Mohindra said the state government was strictly implementing the Pre-Conception (PC) and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Test (PNDT) Act, but needed the support of the doctors’ fraternity.

Mohindra, pointing to the decreased sex ratio which is 895 girls against 1,000 boys at present, urged the participating doctors to pledge increase in sex ratio of girls more than boys in the next one year.

He said the Punjab Government was making efforts to spread awareness against female foeticide.

The minister added that he would soon visit all Municipal Corporations and would hold meetings with MPs, MLAs and mayors as well as officials to review ongoing projects in their areas.

Former IMA president Dr Mukesh Gupta felicitated chief guest Brahm Mohindra, following which the PCPNDT Act was discussed in detail.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Civil Surgeon Dr Rajesh Kumar Bagga, Congress leader Daljeet Singh Ahluwalia, District Family and Welfare Officer Dr Surinder Kumar, representatives of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association, Punjab, and Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan functionaries were present on the occasion. — TNS
