Drug smuggling: 200 cops raid Ganna village, nab six

JALANDHAR: In a special drive carried out by the police, six persons were nabbed from Ganna village in Jalandhar to check drug smuggling.

In a special drive carried out by the police, six persons were nabbed from Ganna village in Jalandhar to check drug smuggling.

The drive was aimed at checking the supply of drugs. The police nabbed six persons for suspicious activities during the special house-to-house search operation conducted at Ganna village near Phillaur.

Those nabbed have been identified as Gurpal Singh, Sukhwinder Kumar, Balwinder Kaur, Bholi, Jatinder Singh and Rajnish Kumar, who are suspected to be drug peddlers.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Jalandhar (rural), Navjot Singh Mahal said during the search operation, which lasted more than three hours, a thorough check of the village was carried out by 200 policemen, led by Superintendent of Police RPS Sandhu, Parminder Singh and AIG, STF, Harwinder Singh.

He said during the search operation, an anti-sabotage team and a dog squad also accompanied the force and conducted checks of every house in the village. Mahal said the police sealed all entry points of the village at 5 am and conducted the operation which lasted till 8.30 am.

The SSP said during investigation, five grams of heroin was recovered from Gurpal Singh, nine bottles of illicit liquor from Sukhwinder Kumar and six bottles of illicit liquor were recovered from Balwinder Kaur.

An FIR has been registered against them at the Phillaur police station. The SSP said the antecedents of the remaining three were being verified, adding that such operations would continue in the coming days to ensure that Jalandhar was made a drug-free district.

The SSP said thrust was being laid on houses of suspected drug peddlers for which special raids were made. During checks, the teams had interacted with villagers during which their support for wiping out drug abuse was solicited.

The SSP said the villagers assured the police of their full cooperation for this noble cause. Deputy Superintendents of Police Davinder Attri, Harneel Singh and Surinderpal, among others, were also present.
