For months, shopkeepers had been extending their merchandise onto pavements and portions of the road, causing persistent traffic congestion and obstructing pedestrian movement. Despite repeated warnings issued in earlier meetings, no improvement was observed, prompting officials to initiate a coordinated action. During the operation, the enforcement teams moved through the market area and cleared goods that had been placed outside designated shop limits. Several items were seized on the spot as shopkeepers attempted to argue against the removal.
Officials emphasised that the congested stretch had become increasingly difficult to manage, particularly during peak hours, and that such obstructions posed safety risks for commuters. The Red Cross Secretary reiterated that the market had been redesigned in 2021 with clear demarcation lines for each shop, yet many traders continued to violate these norms.
Officers stated that regular complaints were being received from residents and commuters regarding blocked access and the narrowing of the road due to encroachments. The administration clarified that this drive was part of a broader effort to restore order in commercial zones and ensure smooth traffic flow across the city. Strict warnings were issued to all shopkeepers, making it clear that any future violations would result in heavier penalties and permanent confiscation of goods. Officials also noted that follow-up inspections would be carried out to ensure compliance and prevent the re-emergence of illegal extensions.
