The 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev are on in full swing at Sultanpur Lodhi. People from all walks of life have been visiting Sultanpur Lodhi to pay obeisance. Residents are organising langars and trying to contribute to the celebrations in whichever way possible.

Farmers from various districts have reached the holy town and are organising various types of langars.

Davinder Singh from Nawanshahr, along with his family, has been organising langars of sugarcane juice for the past two days.

“I will be here for two more days. I felt like coming here and helping people by giving them sugarcane juice. I have brought sugarcane from my farm. We do not get payments for our produce but with this, at least we are utilising our produce for a great cause. This is for Guru Nanak Dev,” he said. He said 100-150 quintals of sugarcane were being used for the langar. “Devotees have thronged the place and the atmosphere is serene here. There is a different kind of happiness here,” he said.

People have been contributing to the celebrations in various ways.

Activities at schools

The Education Department has been coming up with several interesting events to mark the celebrations.

From November 14, various events such as puzzle-solving activities and rhymes will be held for pre-nursery classes. The events will take place till November 30. During the days, cursive, calligraphy and table competitions will also be held. Education officers of every district have been asked to make sure that the activities are conducted in schools. It is also instructed by the Education Department that videos and pictures of students who will take part in the activities must be shared with the head office. The events are being celebrated in the state on large scale and every department is involved in organising the activities.

Besides, the department is also preparing a book which will be released on the Gurpurb. It will include content based on the life of the first Sikh Guru for which the department has invited material from students and teachers of government schools.

The department in a circular issued to school principals has said creations (poetry, story or essay) must be original and it should not have got printed in any newspaper or book in the past. It also mentioned that words must be according to child’s psychology.— TNS
