Farmers under the banner of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee staged a protest outside the SDM’s office in Shahkot on Monday.

Raising slogans against the state government, the farmers demanded complete debt waiver, do away with registries done by arhtiyas and Rs40,000 per acre compensation for flood-affected farmers. They also submitted a demand letter to the state government through the SDM.

Addressing the protesters, state president of committee Satnam Singh Pannu, members Gurlal Singh Pandori and Salwinder Jania said five farmers were committing suicide per day in the state and arthiyas are sending notices and getting cases lodged against farmers through banks and courts.

The protesters also demanded the strengthening of Dhussi bundh, domestic electricity at Rs1 per unit, reimplementation of cancelled intekaals (land documents) and abolishment of the Panchayat Common Land Act.
