Giving relief to commuters at the city railway station, the four-wheelers’ parking lot, which was closed for over two months now, was reopened late this evening. Residents and passengers could avail the facility from Thursday onwards. Owing to the mismanagement and the termination of contract, the station authorities in November last year had asked the previous contractor to vacate the parking lot.

“The new tender of the parking lot has been allotted to a private company, but formal communication in this regard has not been made yet,” said the Superintendent at the railway station. He said the parking would be reopened in the midnight today.

However, the parking rates have been increased by the new contractors.

Abir Kumar, caretaker for the parking lot, said the new contract had been fixed for three years. Hence, the rates were raised accordingly.

He said as per the revised rates, motorists now have to shell out 20 bucks more for the 1 minute-four hours time slot. Previously, Rs 35 to Rs 40 was charged for this time slot, whereas, under the revised rates, people have to pay Rs 60, including 18 per cent GST.

Till now, for the slot of four hour-24 hours, residents were paying Rs 118. However, now onwards Rs 120 would be charged for parking four-wheelers for over four hours. Subsequently, every 24 hours, parking has been fixed for Rs 120.

Though the parking was not open, some of the residents had started parking their vehicles in the lot and when they were informed about the new rates, they opposed the rates.

Joginder Singh, who had come to the station to drop his parents, said after every six-eight months, new parking rates were introduced by the contractors, which was quite unfair for commuters. The station authorities should intervene in the matter and genuine rates should be fixed, besides new time slots should also be introduced.

Previous contractor was told to vacate parking lot

Owing to the mismanagement and the termination of the previous contract, the railway station authorities in November last year had asked the previous contractor to vacate the parking lot.
