Jalandhar, January 22

Mortal remains of freedom fighter Chanan Singh were consigned to flames with full honours at Ladhewali amid thousands of mourners and sympathisers who reached here to pay homage to the departed soul.

Chanan Singh, who had passed away on Monday, was a veteran freedom fighter associated with the Indian National Army (INA) and was imprisoned by the British during the World War-II. As the pyre of the departed freedom fighter was lit, a contingent of the Punjab Police gave salute to the departed soul.

Sub Divisional Magistrate Sanjiv Sharma, who attended the funeral of the freedom fighter, mourned the death of the legendary son of India. In the presence of a large number of people who were here to attend the cremation, the officer laid down wreath on the mortal remains of Chanan Singh and consoled the bereaved family members.

Sharma said it was unfortunate that the nation had lost an illustrious son who had rendered valuable service to the motherland during the freedom struggle.

He said the entire nation was indebted to the great soul for the remarkable service of the country.
