In a joint operation, the counter-intelligence wing of the Jalandhar and Police Commissionerate have arrested gangster Gurwinder Singh, alias Baba, who was involved in the murder case of Ajay Kumar Dona, a resident of Balmiki Mohalla, Dakoha, on July 27 this year.

The AIG, counter-Intelligence wing, HPS Khakh, said Baba (39), who is a resident of Pholriwal village, was involved in over six criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, dacoity, in Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. He is a proclaimed offender and he was wanted by the police in many cases.

Khakh said the counter intelligence wing received a tip-off that Baba was heading towards his village and the information was immediately shared with the Commissionerate of Police, following which a joint team of the Counter-intelligence, Jalandhar, and the Rama Mandi police station was formed. The police arrested him after at a naka near the Urban Estate railway crossing.

He said Baba originally belonged to Rajasthan but after the death of his father in 1981, his mother migrated to Punjab and started residing in his maternal Pholriwal village. The AIG said he was an active member of the ‘Sheru Group’ of the Doaba region, which was headed by another absconding gangster Sukhi Dhirowalia.

He said preliminary interrogation revealed that on July 27 at about 7.10 pm when Dona came out of a gym in Rama Mandi, Baba executed the killing along with his associates, Arjun Sehgal and others. They ruthlessly shot dead Dona by pumping four bullets into his body and disappeared from the spot, taking advantage of the crowd in the busy market area.

Khakh said the assailants had planned the murder at the house of Baba in Pholriwal and the latter was also the main financier of the crime. He said the suspect intentionally chose the place and time as the deceased could not carry any arms while going to the gym.

After the murder, the assailants returned to Pholriwal and stayed the night in the village and the next day, they got separated. Baba went to Rajasthan where he had a parental house and lived there for months.

“After staying in Rajasthan, he returned to the village and tried to change his identity by growing long moustaches and beard. He has been continuously changing his hideouts to give a slip to the police,” Khakh added.

Accomplice on the run

The Commissionerate of Police had already arrested Jagdeep Singh, alias Jagga, Yograj Singh, alias Yoga, and Mukesh Kumar, alias Lala, on August 2 in connection with the murder case but the main accused, Baba and Arjun Sehgal, were on the run. Now after Baba’s arrest, police parties have been alerted to arrest Seghal.
