Gangster nabbed after late night shootout

  • The arrested gangster was identified as Ajay Kumar, alias Lakki, a resident of Mannan village. A 7.65 mm pistol, three live cartridges and two bullet shells were recovered from the accused.

A gangster was nabbed after a shootout near Kot Fatuhi late last night by the Mahilpur police while four others escaped in the dark. He was produced by the police in a court and was sent on a three-day remand for interrogation.

DSP Rakesh Kumar stated this while addressing a press meet at the local Police Ground today.

He said the police had received a tip-off that a gang was preparing for a big crime in the Mahilpur area. Upon receipt of the information, a team, headed by Sukhvinder Singh, in-charge of the CIA staff, was sent on the order of SSP J Elanchezhian.

He said the joint team, along with in-charge of the Mahilpur police station Baljit Singh, took action and surrounded them near Panchanangala village.

“Seeing the police, the gangsters who were in a car opened fire at them. In reply, the police also fired on them after which the accused tried to flee the spot. The police chased them and nabbed one of the accused while the four others managed to escape,” the DSP said.

The arrested gangster was identified as Ajay Kumar, alias Lakki, a resident of Mannan village.

He said a 7.65 mm pistol and three live cartridges and two bullet shells were recovered from the accused. While the absconding gangsters were identified as Mani Singh, a resident of Mannan, Kamal, a resident of Hoshiarpur, Jagdeep Singh Jagga of Rajpur Bhaian (Sammati Amber), Balwinder Singh, alias Binder, a resident of Chabbewal.

In search of the absconding accused, raids were being conducted at probable hideouts.

The DSP said a case of robbery was registered on July 24 in Bajwara village against the arrested accused. During that incident, the accused had fired gunshots.
