Good Samaritans turn lifeline for flood victims

Amid several bottlenecks during the relief operations, many do-gooders and local residents have been bringing a lease of life to flood-hit areas of the district with the help of rations and relief works.

Amid several bottlenecks during the relief operations, many do-gooders and local residents have been bringing a lease of life to flood-hit areas of the district with the help of rations and relief works. While the district administration pressed in choppers yesterday, hundreds of organisations and communities from various villages across the state have been bringing in aid to stranded villages. At almost all spots, as per village residents, do-gooders and their langars had become a lifeline for survival for people.

At a less crowded (than Janian Chahal) Mundi Chohlian-Sardarwala Dhussi bundh, the approach road has been blocked for cars and big vehicles by residents who are only allowing motorcycles to pass through. Since this morning, the flooded Lohian highway has been crowded with tractor-trailers, rations and other amenities brought by various residents.

At the bundh, members of the Bhai Ghanaiya Sewa Dal, Vatvaran Society, Nagar Karam Sewa Dal and Vapar Mandal Sewa Dal, all from Shahkot, said: “We have been here ever since the bundh broke. We are bringing rations and water in tractor-trailers every day. More boats are the need of the hour at all spots. These would help us in ferrying rations and other basic items for residents.”
