BJP national leader Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to create an elite central anti-drug force to confront what he described as Punjab’s deepening “moral and emotional crisis” caused by rampant narcotics.
In a strongly worded statement issued here today, Grewal said the state is standing at a painful turning point, with the drug scourge tearing apart families, destabilising villages and blighting the future of an entire generation. Calling the crisis far more severe than a mere law-and-order concern, Grewal warned that it has grown into a humanitarian tragedy in which “every lost young life is a deep wound to the soul of Punjab.” Stressing that his appeal was rooted in human suffering rather than political interest, he spoke of the silent agony of parents watching their children fall prey to addiction and of communities living in fear of a drug trade that has become deeply entrenched. Grewal said he had full faith in the “zero-tolerance” approach of PM Modi and HM Shah and urged the Centre to intensify enforcement mechanisms to liberate Punjab from the grip of narcotics. He proposed the formation of a Special Anti-Drug Force, structured as an elite, centrally supervised unit free from political influence and equipped with advanced intelligence tools, modern weaponry and trained young officers dedicated exclusively to dismantling drug networks. Calling for bold and uncompromising action, Grewal demanded the immediate identification of the top 100 drug mafia operators linked to Punjab and sought a coordinated crackdown by national agencies including the NIA, ED, IB, RAW and BSF. He emphasised that the financial infrastructure, political backing and foreign linkages supporting these networks must be exposed and uprooted to break the drug supply chain “from the top to the street level.” Warning that incremental steps will no longer suffice, Grewal said only decisive, fearless action can protect Punjab’s youth and future. “This fight is not for headlines but for lives,” he asserted, appealing to the nation to stand with Punjab at a defining moment in its struggle against drugs.
