After three decades, a wooden floor has been laid at the gymnasium hall in the city. The wooden floor was of the prime importance for the gymnasts.

Besides, the hall has also been extended by demolishing stairs on the one side of the hall, thus increasing the space to play.

As per the information, the hall was constructed in 1988 at Sports School. Since then, the players used to practice on the cemented ground. On cemented ground, the chances to get hurt were high, resulting in the performance of players.

“Earlier there were chances of getting hurt. Wooden floor acts as a cushion for the players. The wooden flooring has been done properly. Besides, the space has also been extended,’’ said the coach.

“There was no other hall with wooden floor in the city. Wooden flooring of the hall will help the players to excel better,” said an official.

At present, a total of 70 players are undergoing training. Of these, around 22 are residential players.

Luv Kumar, a gymnastic coach said there were a number of national-level players who were getting training.

“Lately, a state-level tournament was held, and now the players have gone to play at the national- level championship, which would be held in Tripura,” said the coach.

Amandeep, Amanjit, Harmandeep are some of the players who have played at the national-level.

Besides, the renovation of the basketball ground has also been proposed to the Sports Department, so the smoothening of the ground is also required. lwinder Singh, District Sports Officer, said: “Many centre like boxing and volleyball are being renovated, adding that in February a state-level competition of, table tennis, hockey and handball would be held in the city.” — TNS
