Felicitation for medical excellence
Jalandhar: Dr Vijay Mahajan, Chief Managing Director, Tagore Hospital and Heart Care Centre, Jalandhar, was honoured with the ‘Award-Pride’ by DAV College, Jalandhar, at its 87th convocation on Monday. Dr Mahajan was felicitated for his contributions to society and excellence in the medical field as a leading expert in cardiovascular treatment in the region. He was awarded by chief guest Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, the Election Commissioner of India. Credited with starting the heart surgery programme for the first time in northern India after Delhi, in 1991, in the private sector, Dr Mahajan is also the recipient of various other prestigious awards. He has been awarded the PGI Alumni Award; Himachal Gaurav Award; ‘Physician Par Excellence Award’ by Association of Physicians of India; Excellence Award by World Hypetertension League and numerous awards by IMA Punjab. The Tagore Hospital and Heart Care Centre, which was established in 1979, has its name entered in the Limca Book of Records 2000 for performing two major cardiovascular operations for the first time in the world. Under him, the hospital has arranged 400 free medical camps across Punjab and Himachal and also runs charitable dispensaries in both states.
Glaucoma week celebrations
Jalandhar: The Health Department is celebrating World Glaucoma Week from March 9 to 15. In this regard, Jalandhar Civil Surgeon Dr Gurmeet Lal released an awareness poster at his office on Monday. On the occasion, District Family Welfare Officer Dr Raman Gupta, District Vaccination Officer Dr Rakesh Chopra, Assistant Health Officer Dr Satjit Kaur, District Dental Health Officer Dr Baljit Ruby, among others, were present. Dr Lal said glaucoma (black cataract) was one of the main causes of permanent blindness in India. He talked about the symptoms of glaucoma, including a limited field of vision, unusual headaches, frequent changing of reading glasses, pain and redness in the eyes etc. He said if anyone had these symptoms, they should seek medical attention. Dr Lal said if a person had diabetes and hypertension in addition to this, if they used steroids for allergies, asthma, skin diseases, etc, then they were more susceptible to glaucoma/cataracts. He said every person above the age of 40 must get their eyes checked regularly.
3 Ayushman Arogya centres feted
Jalandhar: Civil Surgeon Dr Gurmeet Lal felicitated the staff of the Ayushman Arogya Kendras at Mianwal, Dalla and Sanora for their excellent performance under the National Quality Assurance Standard (NQAS) programme at his office. While giving this information, the Civil Surgeon said that under the NQAS programme, government health institutions were evaluated on seven parametres —pregnancy and maternity care, newborn and child health services, childhood and adolescent health services, family planning, management of communicable diseases, management of common diseases and management of non-communicable diseases. These three centres had done well in the assessment, he said. The Civil Surgeon appreciated the efforts of the staff of these centres and motivated them to provide benefits of health services to the people in an even better manner. On the occasion, SMO Dr Jaswinder Singh, Dr Neha, District Group Education and Information Officer Gurdeep Singh and the staff were present.
