Health team rescues expectant mother from marooned village

A step initiated by the state government to extend help to flood-affected villages of the district via boats proved beneficial for an expectant mother who was evacuated by a mobile team and admitted to a Community Health Centre, Lohian.

Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said on the directions of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, mobile teams had been constituted for helping people of marooned villages.

He said one of the mobile teams received a call that Mithri Devi (30) from Mehrajwala was facing severe pain. Sub Divisional Magistrate Charumita Shekhar rushed to the spot along with a team.

The Deputy Commissioner said the team rescued the pregnant woman from the village on a boat and after giving her first aid brought her to the Community Health Centre, Lohian.

He said she was 32 weeks and seven days pregnant. The basic purpose of starting the mobile boats was to ensure that people get facilities required for them at their doorsteps.

Meanwhile, Civil Surgeon Gurinder Kaur Chawla said till now 4,589 persons have visited medical camps in flood affected areas whereas 31 have been evacuated.

She said mobile teams had examined 653 persons of which 119 have been diagnosed with fever, 135 with URC (throat infection) 63 with diarrhoea, 173 with skin problems, 33 with hypertension, 88 with eye infections and 56 with others. She said the teams would remain operational in coming days too.
