Hope returns to Baupur: MP Seechewal leads wheat sowing for flood-hit farmers

In the flood-affected Baupur Mand area, Rajya Sabha Member Balbir Singh Seechewal has been giving special priority to the wheat sowing needs of small farmers. Early this morning, he personally sowed wheat on the 3.5-acre farmland of a marginal farmer, Amritpal Singh. Several other farmers from Baupur village gathered at the site and shared their concerns, noting that those owning just 2.5 to 3 acres are the ones who need support the most.

Gurmel Singh and Jail Singh—brothers from Baupur Jadeed—said they had lost their 1.5 acres each during the floods. The layer of silt that settled on their land was beyond their capacity to remove, making wheat sowing seem impossible.

According to them, Seechewal arrived as a saviour—first getting the land levelled and then facilitating wheat sowing, helping them regain a sense of hope. Gurlal Singh, who owns two acres, shared a similar ordeal. His paddy stubble was destroyed in the floods and a thick layer of sand had accumulated on his fields. With limited resources, clearing the land was out of his reach. He said his family is able to sustain itself again only because of the timely intervention and assistance provided by Seechewal.

Overseeing the tractors and JCB machines, Jarnail Singh and Satinder Singh Bagga revealed that nearly Rs 20 lakh worth of fuel has been consumed over the past 20 days—an average expenditure of around Rs 1 lakh per day. According to Jarnail Singh, two JCB machines and five tractors are operating continuously under his supervision. While the tractors are being used to prepare the fields of small farmers, the JCBs are strengthening and raising an emergency embankment near Shangra village. Gurdev Singh Fauji remarked that for Seechewal, no farmer is big or small—he prioritises the labour and livelihood of every hardworking cultivator.

In the flood-hit belt, he has been personally participating in relief and rehabilitation efforts. Gurdev added that usually no one comes forward to support small farmers, but Seechewal is always the first to reach out and help them stand on their feet with dignity. Additionally, Seechewal has also facilitated land-levelling and wheat sowing for farmers owning 5 to 10 acres, extending support across all segments of the community.
