In a major haul the police busted a racket involved in inter-state liquor smuggling with the arrest of a smuggler from Goraya along-with 950 cases (85.50 lakh millilitres) of illegal liquor today.

Giving more information, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP-Rural), Navjot Singh Mahal, said the Station House Officer (SHO), Goraya, Kewal Singh, received a tip-off that an inter-state liquor smuggling gang was active in the region.

The SSP said Rajinder Singh, son of Harbhajan Singh, a resident of Tarsikka in Amritsar was doing the bussiness of supplying illegal liquor in Punjab from other states. The police had clue that Rajinder would be coming to Goraya via Ludhiana with illegal liquor, which he had loaded from Karnal (Haryana) today, the SSP added.

A police party laid a nake near RK Dhaba in Goraya and started checking vehicles. On spotting a truck (bearing registration No. HR 58 -7728), which was coming from the Phillaur side, the police party signalled its driver to stop the vehicle, the SSP said.

During thorough checking of the truck as many as 950 cases of liquor of “Jubilee Rare” with a label for sale in Haryana only were recovered by the police party, the SSP added.

“The police has arrested the truck driver identified as Rajinder Singh, a resident of Amritsar district. A case has been registered against the truck driver under Section 61 of the Excise Act,” the SSP said. “The police are investigating the matter. Several more disclosures are expected from the arrested suspect during further interrogation,” the SSP added.
