In a significant step towards promoting compassion and animal welfare, SS Jain Sabha, Phagwara inaugurated the Bhagwan Mahabir Jain Gaushala at a ceremony at Khaati village near Phagwara on Sunday. The initiative marks a meaningful contribution by the Jain community towards the care and protection of stray cows, in keeping with the principles of non-violence and selfless service.
Punjab Local Bodies Minister Dr Ravjot Singh inaugurated the gaushala and lauded the effort as a noble example of community-driven social responsibility. He said such institutions not only protect animals but also strengthen ethical and cultural values in society. Lok Sabha Member Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal, who attended as a special guest, appreciated the Jain Sabha for offering a sustainable and humane solution to the growing problem of stray cattle.
The ceremony drew wide participation from political, social and civic leaders, including former minister Joginder Singh Maan, Halka in-charge Harji Maan, Bobby Bedi, Phagwara Mayor Ram Paul Uppal, Deputy Mayor Vikki Sood, District Planning Board chairperson Lalit Saklani, Rotarian Sat Pal Sethi, Inder Khurana, former municipal council president Malkiat Singh Ragbotra and SDO (Water Supply) Pardeep Chottani, reflecting broad public support for the initiative.
The three-hour function was enriched by spiritual discourses and blessings from revered Jain saints, who underscored the Jain philosophy of serving all living beings and protecting nature.
The gaushala has been established through the collective efforts of members of the Jain community, including Satish Jain, Kimti Lal Jain, Varinder Jain, Vipin Jain, Sushil Jain, Ram Singh Rana, Baltej Singh Dhillon, Vishwa Jain and Neelam Jain, among others, whose dedication turned the vision into reality.
Designed to shelter and care for stray cows, the Bhagwan Mahabir Jain Gaushala will provide nutritious food, medical care and a safe environment for abandoned and vulnerable cattle.
