Phagwara, December 8
Factionalism in the Congress in Phagwara witnessed during the elections of Youth Congress. Saurav Khullar, the close confidant of Phagwara MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, was elected as the District Youth Congress Committee president on Saturday.
He defeated Harnoor Singh Maan, son of former minister Joginder Singh Maan, with a margin of 74 votes. Khullar got 643 votes while Maan got 569 votes. Baljinder Singh Baansal a third candidate got 54 votes.
It is worth mentioning that during the Assembly elections, Maan, who was also an aspirant for the Congress ticket but on the advise of Chief Minister (CM) and Punjab Industry Minister Sunder Sham Arora, withdrew his claim and made efforts to ensure the victory of Dhaliwal who won the byelections from the Phagwara Assembly seat with a big margin. The Assembly seat of Phagwara was lying vacant as Phagwara MLA Som Parkash had contested the Lok Sabha elections and won and now serving as the Union Minister of State.
