The district Kapurthala Wrestling Association organised the district-level Under-17 and Under-20 wrestling championship at Raipur Dabba Wrestling Academy, Parm Nagar, Phagwara, under the directives of Wrestling Federation of India president Sanjay Kumar Singh and the guidance of Punjab Wrestling Association president Raman Bakhshi.
The championship was conducted under the leadership of district president wrestler Rimpal Kumar, Sarpanch of Wajidowal, and under the supervision of former Chief Wrestling Coach Bharat PR Sondhi. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from young wrestlers across various weight categories, reflecting the growing popularity of the sport in the district.
The tournament was inaugurated by members of Brahman Mandal Khati Dham, including Principal Harmesh Pathak, Hariom Sharma, Brij Lal Paruthi, Sandeep Sharma, Rajat Bhanot (Sarpanch Bhullarai), Rajan Parashar, Deepak Sharma and Chetan Sharma. They extended their best wishes to the wrestlers and contributed fruits and refreshments for the participants.
In the Under-17 category, the selected wrestlers included Manav (35 kg), Lovepreet (48 kg), Ekam (51 kg), Sandeep Basra (65 kg), Tejas Dhadwal (80 kg) and Gurnoor Singh (110 kg).
In the Under-20 category, the winners were Neeraj Mall (65 kg), Suraj (70 kg), Jasdil (74 kg), Amarinder Singh (86 kg), Karnveer Singh (92 kg), Hardeep Basra (97 kg) and William Sidhu (125 kg).
Providing further details, district general secretary Reet Preet Pal Singh informed that in the Greco-Roman wrestling event, William Sidhu emerged victorious in the 130 kg weight category by defeating Shabdal of RCF Kapurthala. All selected wrestlers will now represent the district at the forthcoming Punjab State Wrestling Championship.
NRI Pindu Johal attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest and distributed cash prizes, trophies and gold medals to the winners. He lauded the sustained efforts of the District Kapurthala Wrestling Association in nurturing young talent and promoting wrestling at the grassroots level.
District president Rimpal Kumar, Treasurer Salwinder Singh Jassi, joint secretary and wrestling coach Ravinder Nath, vice-president Sunish Kumar (Sarpanch Karali Kapurthala), joint secretary Aman Kapurthala and wrestler Malkiat Kanjhli also honoured the office-bearers of Brahman Mandal and NRI Pindu Johal for their support. Coach Yatin Shukla and several prominent sports enthusiasts were also present on the occasion.
The successful conduct of the championship underscored the district association's commitment to identifying and grooming promising wrestlers, paving the way for stronger representation at the state level and beyond.
