As the Congress had knocked the doors of the High Court against the postponing the mayoral elections by the presiding officer on January 25, Divisional Commissioner, Jalandhar, Arun Sekhri has called a meeting of all councillors on February 1 at 4 pm in Phagwara.

Municipal Corporation Commissioner Navneet Kaur Bal has sent the meeting notices to all 50 councillors and to Phagwara MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal through WhatsApp late last night while formal notices were delivered to them this morning.

In the present scenario after leaving the Congress by three councillors Ram Pal Uppal, Padam Dev Sudhir and Munish Parbhakar yesterday now the number of the Congress-BSP alliance stands at 22 plus one vote of MLA Dhaliwal, while Congress councillor Sanjeev Bugga is claiming the support of more than three Independents.

The number of AAP councillors has now risen to 18 and AAP needed the support of eight more councillors and AAP leaders are keeping an eye on the elected councillors of SAD, the BJP even BSP, besides Independents. The mystery could be solved in February 1 meeting only.

Meanwhile, several BJP leaders like former Rajya Sabha Member Avinash Rai Khanna, former Union Minister Som Parkash, national farmer leader Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal and Parminder Mehta have criticised the ongoing horse trading of councillors ahead of the mayoral elections.

They pointed out that the Municipal Corporation elections, held on December 21, 2024, reflected the will of the people of Phagwara, who decisively voted against the turncoats. However, they expressed regret that the meeting scheduled for January 25 to elect the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor was postponed without any voting.

They alleged that political leaders were more focused on manipulating elected representatives rather than respecting the mandate of the people.

They further urged political parties to uphold the sanctity of democracy and ensure that elected representatives respect the voters’ mandate instead of prioritising personal or party interests. He emphasised that such actions disillusion citizens and undermine democratic values.
