In a shocking incident that has sparked public outrage, the main entrance gate of a municipal park-constructed barely six months ago at a reported cost of Rs 15 lakh-collapsed on Sunday afternoon, leaving two children injured and raising serious concerns over the quality of construction and oversight by the civic authorities.
The incident occurred in a residential neighbourhood where the park serves as a primary recreational space for local families and children. According to eyewitnesses, several children were playing near the entrance when the iron gate structure suddenly gave way and crashed to the ground. The loud noise drew residents from nearby houses, who rushed to the scene to rescue the injured minors trapped beneath parts of the fallen structure.
The injured children were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated for fractures and bruises. Doctors have confirmed that both are currently out of danger, though one of them sustained a leg injury that may require further medical attention. Families of the victims have demanded strict action against those responsible for what they described as "criminal negligence."
Preliminary accounts from local residents suggest that the gate had shown visible signs of weakness in recent weeks. "The structure would shake whenever someone pushed it. We had complained informally to local representatives, but no action was taken," said a resident living adjacent to the park. Others alleged that the foundation appeared shallow and that inferior materials might have been used during construction.
The park gate was inaugurated with much publicity less than a year ago as part of a beautification and infrastructure development initiative undertaken by the municipal corporation. The project reportedly included installation of decorative ironwork, boundary repairs, and landscaping. However, Sunday's collapse has cast a shadow over the entire development effort.
Civic officials visited the site shortly after the incident and cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents. A senior municipal engineer stated that a technical team has been constituted to investigate the cause of the collapse. "We will conduct a structural assessment and examine whether there were lapses in construction standards. If any contractor is found guilty of negligence, strict action will follow," the official said.
Local residents, however, remain sceptical. Many have called for an independent inquiry, alleging possible irregularities in the tendering and supervision process. "How can a structure worth Rs 15 lakh collapse within six months? Either the materials were substandard or there was corruption involved," questioned a community member during a spontaneous gathering at the site.
The incident has also triggered a political response, with opposition representatives accusing the civic administration of failing to ensure quality control in public works. They have demanded that details of the project expenditure, contractor credentials, and inspection reports be made public.
