The city police today arrested four extortionists, including a 16-year-old and his elder brother, and seized ransom money of Rs 50,000 from their possession.

The suspects have been identified as Amandeep Singh (22), his minor brother (16) of New Gurdev Nagar, their maternal uncle Jodh Singh (32) of Fateh Singh Nagar in Amritsar and Deepak, alias Nannu (23), of Partap Nagar, Sodal Road. Jodh was nabbed from the Jalandhar bypass in Ludhiana.

The 16-year-old planned the whole incident with his elder brother. The suspects threatened a jeweller, Om Parkash (name changed), and demanded Rs 10 lakh as ransom. The accused had threatened that they would kidnap his son and kill him.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said during preliminary interrogation it had come to the fore that the minor suspect was well-known to the jeweller’s son and had visited the latter’s house many times and conspired to extort the money from the family with Amandeep and Deepak.

He said on April 5, the accused made a phone call to the jeweller on his mobile phone that someone had given them a contract to kill him and if he wants to save his life, he would have to pay him Rs 10 lakh.

“When the complainant did not pay any heed to their calls, the suspect stole jeweller’s Activa scooter on April 14 to build pressure on him for the ransom. The suspect again called him and threatened to kidnap his son following which the victim agreed to pay Rs 6 lakh to them but gave only Rs 50,000 in a bag”, Bhullar added.

The stolen activa was sold to Jodh Singh for Rs 5,000. Further, they had confessed that after getting the extortion money, they had conspired to abduct jeweller’s son for a huge ransom money.

The police also recovered two mobile phones, a Splendor motorcycle (PB08-BN-2421) used in the crime, a stolen Activa (PB08-CL-9172), a sharp weapon and a toy pistol from them.

While addressing a press conference, Bhullar accompanied by DCP (Investigation) Gurmeet Singh said some unidentified persons were threatening a jeweller, Om Parkash (name changed), and demanding Rs 10 lakh for the past few days as ransom, failing which they would kidnap his son and kill him.

He said the jeweller got frightened and paid Rs 50,000 in a black bag by throwing it stealthily in flower pots on GT Road near Sarb Multiplex as told by the extortionists over phone to him. The bag was picked by three bike-borne persons.

“Afterwards, jeweller Om Parkash (name changed) complained to the police about the incident and a case under Sections 384, 34, 379 and 411 of IPC has been registered against unknown persons. Following his statement, the Commissionerate Police formed three special teams of CIA-1, CIA-2 and Police Station-2 to nab the extortionists and on the basis of CCTV footages and investigation arrested the four suspects,” the CP said.

He said the minor suspect was studying in Class X while his elder brother Amandeep and accomplice Deepak were into the business of manufacturing aluminium gates. Two criminal cases were already registered against Deepak at Police Station 2.
