Jalandhar, March 19
The Jalandhar rural police on Tuesday arrested a Madhya Pradesh resident and recovered 3 kg of opium from his possession near the Bidhipur railway crossing.
The suspect has been identified as Mann Singh of Thakur Mohalla, Barod, in Madhya Pradesh. Addressing a press meet, SP (investigation) Rajveer Singh said Maqsudan SHO Jarnail Singh and Sub-Inspector Surjit Singh was conducting a patrolling near the Bidhipur railway crossing.
He said a person got off a private bus coming from the Jalandhar side and while seeing the police, he changed the direction and started moving towards Bidhipur village.
He said on suspicion, the police apprehended him.
The SP said the police party informed Kartarpur DSP Ranjit Singh Bandesha, following which he also reached the spot. In his presence, the suspect was frisked and 1.5 kg of opium from a plastic bag tied on his waist, with the help of a piece of cloth, and 1.5 kg of opium hidden in an artificial limb were recovered. He said a case under Section 19 of the NDPS Act had been registered against him at the Maqsudan police station.
He said a thorough probe in the matter was being conducted to know his link-ups.
The police said in the past eight months, a total of 34 kg and 112 gm of opium had been recovered by the Jalandhar (rural) police. — TNS
