Jalandhar, December 8

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) council was set up in the district in December last year.

This year, the MSME council has registered around 550 cases related to delayed payments of small and micro industrialists. Besides, some cases are of 2010 and 2011. Members of the council said till date, around 100 cases had been settled, while several were in arbitration. The last hearing of the council was held in November, while the next hearing is on December 13.

The members said the industrialists were becoming aware that they could take their cases to the council. Earlier, the headquarters of the council was in Chandigarh. But after the formation of the council in the district, cases pertaining to Jalandhar have been transferred here. The council registers cases related to delayed payments. Besides, there are some cases related to due interest and principal amount.

The Deputy Commissioner is the chairman of the council, while General Manager, District Industry Centre, is the member secretary. Besides, an advocate, a lead district manager, and an industrialist are part of the council.

It has been established to solve the issues of small scale industrialists and help them get payments from other parties in case the latter do not return their due amount.

Shant Kumar, a council member, said, “In the council, it is not necessary that industrialists, who were filing a case, have to take help from an advocate. We have decided that we will hold hearings twice a month.” He said according to rules, the cases must be solved in 90 days.

The rules state that if a buyer fails to return Rs50,000 out of Rs1 lakh, he will have to pay the pending payment with an interest to the party concerned. City industrialists also made efforts to make people aware of the MSME facilitation council in the district. The Jalandhar Chamber of Industries and Commerce had organised an awareness seminar in this regard in the starting of the year. The seminar was chaired by the DC.
