To resolve the problem of traffic congestion in the Model Town locality of the city, a multilevel car parking will be established on the 3.3-acre land under the Smart City project.

A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting held at the residence of Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma which was also attended by MLA Pargat Singh, Mayor Jagdish Raj Raja and Smart City CEO VIshesh Sarangal.

It was decided in the meeting that the whole project of the four-storey car parking, worth Rs 150 crore, would be completed by December 2020 on the PPP mode under the built-operate-transfer basis. The censor-based car parking, to come over at a land belonging to the Municipal Corporation and some portion of Nikku Park, would have a capacity of 750 cars.

To put the project on a fast-track mode, Pargat Singh, Mayor Raja, and a team of senior officials, led by the Deputy Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Parambir Singh Parmar, along with the Smart City CEO visited the site today.

The MLA said it was the dire need of the area to have such a facility as the market here remained choked due to the unavailability of an authorised car parking.

He said the project would be based on a censor-based technology and there would be reasonable parking charges.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner said the parking facility would have two basements, adding two of its floors would be used for commercial purposes.

He said boom barriers, digital display, sensors and CCTV cameras would also be provided in the building, making it a smart car park facility. Besides, it would also have a green area outside the building. Sharma said tenders for the project would be floated soon.
