Nawanshahr DC reviews flood protection, urges timely project completion before monsoon

Deputy Commissioner, Nawanshahr, Gulpreet Singh Aulakh on Tuesday reviewed the ongoing flood protection works in the district in view of the forthcoming monsoon season. Assessing the preparedness of the district administration, the Deputy Commissioner took stock of projects being executed by different departments to mitigate flood risks.

He directed officials to identify vulnerable points along the Dhussi bundh, particularly in light of last year's situation, so that timely preventive measures can be undertaken. He also instructed the concerned departments to submit fresh proposals for new works aimed at preventing any flood-like situation during the monsoon. Reiterating the Punjab Government's commitment to safeguarding lives and property, he stressed the need for proactive planning and timely execution.

The Deputy Commissioner emphasised that all ongoing flood protection works must be completed before the onset of the rains to ensure that residents do not face inconvenience. He further directed officials to personally monitor the strengthening works being carried out at the Dhussi bundh along the banks of the Sutlej River to ensure quality and adherence to timelines.

Highlighting the importance of preparedness, he informed that all departments have been asked to keep the 'Flood Protection Action Plan 2026' and the 'District Disaster Management Plan 2026' updated to effectively tackle any emergent situation. He added that a 24x7 flood control room will also be established at the District Administrative Complex to closely monitor developments during the monsoon season.

The Deputy Commissioner categorically stated that any negligence in flood management would not be tolerated and called for coordinated and concerted efforts by all departments to keep the district safe from flood-like situations during the monsoon.
