JALANDHAR: A total of 23 candidates filed their papers today, on the first day of filing nominations for the panchayat poll in the district, scheduled to be on December 30.

A total of 23 candidates filed their papers today, on the first day of filing nominations for the panchayat poll in the district, scheduled to be on December 30. District Electoral Officer Varinder Kumar Sharma said today that seven nominations were received for the post of sarpanch — two in the Jalandhar East block and five in the Nakodar block, whereas 16 nominations were received for the post of panches — two from the Jalandhar East block, four from the Nakodar block, one from the Shahkot block, eight from the Phillaur block and one from the Rurkan Kala block. He said December 19 would be the last date for filing the nominations.

The Deputy Commissioner said the nominations would be scrutinised on December 20 while the date for withdrawal of the same would be December 21, which would also be the date for allotting the election symbols to the candidates.

Sharma said the voting would be held on December 30 from 8 am to 4 pm and counting of votes would be held on the same day after the polling.— TNS
