Phagwara, May 23

The partial role played by the Congress candidate Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal during the communal violence, which took place in Phagwara last year, factionalism in the Congress and the silence of former Union Minister Santosh Chaudhary, over the denial of party ticket, might be the main reason that led to the defeat of Chabbewal in Hoshiarpur parliamentary segment.

Voters, belonging to General Samaj Manch (GSM), were annoyed with Chabbewal who played partial role during the infamous episode in Phagwara last year.

Whereas Som Parkash joined hands with the GSM and played an impartial role to defuse the communal tension. When members of the GSM were staging a dharna here, Chabbewal, along with few leaders of dalit communities, organised a meeting with the Chief Minister (CM) Capt Amarinder Singh in Chandigarh.

Ultimately the voters belonging to the general category preferred to exercise their franchise in favour of Som Parkash than Chabbewal and announced open support to BJP candidate Som Parkash.

Residents in a large numbers thronged the residence of Som Parkash today evening.

Activists of the BJP, led by Mayor Arun Khosla, BJP councillors Anurag Mankhand, Sanjay Grover and Dev Sharma distributed sweets to celebrate the victory of Som Parkash.
