In an operation against drug trafficking, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police have frozen Rs 11 lakh linked to drug money. The action, led by Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, underscores the police commitment to eradicating the drug menace in the city.

The crackdown stems from an FIR registered on September 9, 2019, at Police Station, Basti Bawa Khel, under Sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act. The case involved Makhan Singh, a resident of Gatti Mattar village in Ferozepur, and two accomplices who were caught with 2 kg of heroin. Makhan Singh was arrested the same day, while another accused, Charanjit Singh, alias Channa, was later apprehended on October 11, 2019.

During the investigation, Rs 6.5 lakh was recovered from Makhan Singh, with an additional Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh confiscated from Charanjit Singh, amounting to Rs 11 lakh. These funds were identified as proceeds from drug-related activities.

A request to freeze the seized amount was submitted by the SHO of Basti Bawa Khel to the competent authority under Section 68F of the NDPS Act, 1985. The request was approved by the authorities in New Delhi, officially attaching the assets.

Commissioner Swapan Sharma described the move as a decisive step in sending a clear message to drug peddlers. “This action demonstrates our zero-tolerance policy against drug-related activities. We are resolute in our mission to rid the city of narcotics,” he stated. He also called on the public to support the police's efforts, emphasising the need for collective action to combat the drug menace.
