Jalandhar, May 15

Years ago, the practice of reciting tables was common in schools which used to hone the calculative skills of students. But with the advent of calculators and mobile phones, students have given up on learning tables by heart. But now, the Education Department has asked the middle schools of Punjab to start teaching tables to the students and organise drills in schools so that they can perfect the art of table learning.

The education board has asked the District Education Officers of the state to make students of primary schools learn the tables up to 20.

The circular states that tables are very important to master the subject of mathematics. The tables help students to have good computational skills and develop interest in the subject and teachers must devise ways of helping students learn tables in an interesting way.

It further reads that the students must prepare charts so that they can revise the tables they can learn.

The circular reads that a competition must be held in the last week of the month, so that their performance can be assessed.
