In a significant development ahead of the Chief Minister’s arrival, local police initiated preventive action and placed several prominent employee and labour union leaders under house arrest early morning today. Those detained included Gurmukh Singh, president of the Democratic Teacher Front; Parminder Pal, convener of the Pension Front Mulazam Union; and Satwant Toora, president of the Gazetted and Non-Gazetted SC/BC Employees Welfare Federation. The leaders had been seeking to meet the Chief Minister to present their long-standing demands, particularly concerning issues related to census documentation and employee welfare.
Administrative sources maintained that the preventive measures were taken to ensure smooth conduct of the Chief Minister’s programme and to avoid any disruption during the high-security visit.
Simultaneously, the district administration launched intensive efforts to upgrade infrastructure along the Chief Minister’s route. Road repair work, particularly on the Phagwara-Banga road and key connecting stretches, was undertaken on a war footing late Tuesday evening and continued into Wednesday.
The stretch, previously marked by potholes and uneven surfaces, received urgent patchwork to facilitate safe and smooth movement.
Residents acknowledged the prompt action, with many remarking that the Chief Minister’s visit had acted as a catalyst for long-overdue maintenance work, even as they expressed hope for sustained improvements in the future.
Senior administrative and police officials remained actively engaged throughout the preparations. Deputy Commissioner Akash Bansal and Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora conducted repeated inspections to oversee security arrangements and infrastructural readiness.
They were supported by a team of key officers, including Superintendent of Police Madhvi Sharma, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Randeep Singh Heer, DSP Pakhwinder Singh,Additional Deputy Commissioner Shikha Bhagat and SDO Pardeep Chotanni, all of whom coordinated closely to ensure effective crowd management, route clearance, and inter-departmental functioning.
The coordinated administrative response ensured that the Chief Minister’s halt near Gandhi Chowk in Phagwara proceeded in an orderly and secure manner.
While the visit brought visible administrative efficiency and immediate civic relief, it also renewed public discussion on the importance of consistent governance and long-term solutions to infrastructural challenges beyond the context of high-profile visits.
