Remembering legendary marathon runner Fauja Singh on his 115th birth anniversary
Son says, 'It feels like he is still with us'
On the occasion of what would have been late Fauja Singh's 115th birthday on April 1, the family of legendary marathon runner remembered him with deep emotion and pride.
His son, Harvinder Singh, shared heartfelt memories, saying that not a single day passes without the family speaking about him.
“He would have turned 115 today. Not even a single day goes by when we don’t talk about him. "Edda lagda hai ki oh saade naal hi hai (It feels like as if he is still with us),” Harvinder said, reflecting on the enduring presence of his father in their lives.
Fauja Singh, widely celebrated as one of the world’s oldest marathon runners, passed away in July last year following a tragic road accident in his native village of Bias near Adampur.
His sudden demise left fans and admirers in shock. Family members had expressed their devastation at the time, noting that while he had defied age throughout his life, his death was not natural but the result of being hit by a vehicle, an incident they found deeply difficult to accept.
Despite the loss, Fauja Singh’s legacy continues to inspire. Harvinder revealed that he is frequently invited to running events and marathons -- occasions his father used to attend.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Fauja Singh was also known for his distinctive sense of style. According to his family, he had a fondness for branded clothing and took pride in coordinating his outfits, from shoes to socks with meticulous care.
Renowned author Khushwant Singh, who shared a close bond with Fauja Singh for over two decades, also paid tribute on social media. Remembering him fondly, he wrote, “Remembering my friend, Late Baapu Fauja Singh ji on his birthday.”
