Jalandhar, April 20

The Police Commissionerate today recovered unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 18,81,000 at a check post near Skylark Chowk.

A team of the Police Station 4 was carrying out a checking near the chowk when they stopped a Maruti Swift car and quizzed its driver. Afterwards, the police seized the money from the car.

SHO Kamaljit Singh said the driver of the car, Deepak Bhandari, a resident of Raja Garden, failed to give any satisfactory reply about the whereabouts of the seized cash and told the police party that he works with a city-based international courier company and was on his way to deposit the money in a bank. However, he failed to produce any documents in support of the cash.

The SHO added that a DDR had been filed against Deepak and the case had been handed over to a district-level committee, formed on the orders of the Election Commission.

The committee has taken the money in its custody and would verify whether the cash was supposed to be used for the elections or not.
