The unions have opposed the proposed privatisation of waste collection, for which a tender of Rs 143 crore was being considered. They argue that privatisation would adversely affect their livelihoods and working conditions.

An active union leader said the workers have also been demanding fresh recruitment of safai karamcharis to address staff shortages. The employees warned that they would stop work from December 2 if their demands remain ignored.

“We will proceed on an indefinite strike,” he said.

Other unions aligned with the Safai Mazdoor Federation Punjab carried out extensive sanitation work across the city and cleared garbage from all major dumping points.
