On the directions of Kahn Singh Pannu, Director, Mission Tandarust Punjab mission, and Commissioner, Food, Punjab; Mohammad Tayyab, DC, Kapurthala; and the Kapurthala Civil Surgeon, 18 food wings of Kapurthala inspected food operators engaged in the business of milk and milk products. Four samples were taken on Monday.
A vehicle from Gurdaspur district carrying milk and milk products was intercepted which contained milk, milk cream and bags of skimmed milk powder (SMP). Samples of milk, milk cream and skimmed milk powder were taken from a vehicle at Adda Begowal in Kapurthala. Another sample of paneer was taken from a shop in Kapurthala.
Paneer should not contain over 60.0 per cent moisture and the milk fat content should not be less than 50.0 per cent of the dry matter. Paneer is available in the market at a price starting from minimum Rs 280.
In contrast, paneer brought from other districts is said to be sold at a price of Rs 140 - Rs 150. Such paneer is usually prepared from the SMP and starch. The samples seized on Monday have been sent to the SFL, Kharar. Action will be initiated against offenders under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. — TNS
