Science City hosts Annual Flower Show, promotes green awareness
Pushpa Gujral Science City, organised its Annual Flower Show in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology as the State Nodal Agency, successfully under the Environment Education Programme of the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC).
On this occasion, over 400 members of Eco-Club, gardeners and general public celebrated the beauty and diversity of nature. The flower show featured a range of engaging competitions including fresh flower arrangements, dry flower displays, rangoli and a potted plant exhibition. Participants displayed a wide variety of flowers including marigold, hibiscus, jasmine, lotus, rose and bougainvillea.
Speaking at the event, Dr Rajesh Grover, Director, Science City shared that the flower show is a special event aimed at highlighting the incredible variety of plants and flowers in nature. He explained that the goal of the show is to inspire people to make their surroundings greener by planting more flowers and plants in their campuses and communities. He also pointed out that India is home to a vast number of flowering plants with over 18,000 species which make up about 6-7 per cent of all flowering plants in the world.
The flower show is not just about showcasing beautiful flowers. It’s also about raising awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and providing a platform for people to enjoy the beauty of nature, learn about the value of biodiversity and encourage involvement in conservation efforts, Dr Grover added. He also emphasised that nature’s value goes beyond its visual appeal, playing a crucial role in maintaining ecosystems, supporting food chains and enriching our emotions, cultures and traditions. During the flower show, Baljit Singh from Kapurthala secured first position in the general public category for arranging dried flowers, while Bhavna Gill of Government School, Sidhwan Dona topped the students’ category.
Similarly, in the fresh flower arrangement competition, Kamla Nehru College, Phagwara won first place in the general public category. In the students’ category, Sukhpreet, a student of Government High School, Hamira, secured first position. In the Rangoli competition, Army Nursing College achieved first place.
