Tension prevailed in Goraya after armed assailants opened fire late last night at the residence and shop of jeweller Mukand Lal, owner of DP Jewellers, following an alleged extortion demand of Rs 1 crore. Though no injuries were reported, the incident has sparked serious concern over the rising crime and the security of business owners in the region.

Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary condemned the incident, calling it deeply concerning and reflective of what he termed a deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab. He said the increasing incidents of threats, extortion, and violence were instilling fear among citizens, particularly within the business community.

The MLA visited DP Jewellers in Goraya today to meet the family, express solidarity, and take stock of the situation. He urged the government to take prompt, effective, and time-bound action to trace and punish those responsible. He also stressed the need to strengthen policing and enforcement systems to restore public confidence.

“Ensuring the safety of citizens and maintaining peace must remain the government’s top priority,” he said.

Meanwhile, DSP Bharat Masih stated that police teams have begun investigation into the matter. Officials are examining CCTV footage, collecting evidence, and verifying possible leads related to the extortion threat.
