Students of MLU DAV College, Phagwara, celebrated ‘International Day of Single Girl Child’ on Friday.

Students prepared charts depicting various shades of a girl’s personality. Poems were recited by students highlighting various roles played by females. Principal Kiranjeet Randhawa said the day was celebrated to underline the need for increasing opportunities for girls and for increasing awareness on gender inequality. The celebrations also reflected the successful emergence of girls and young women as a distinct cohort in developmental policies, programming, campaigning, research, the principal said. She further stated that girls were breaking boundaries and barriers posed by stereotypes and exclusion. As entrepreneurs, innovators and initiators of global movements, girls were creating a world that was relevant to them and future generations. The principal said all forms of discrimination, negative cultural attitudes and practices against girls should be eliminated. “Discrimination against girls in receiving education, skill development programmes and training should be stopped. Domestic violence against girls, poor health and nutrition, economic exploitation should end. Rights of girls must be promoted and protected so that they could become confident and independent,” She said.

The principal advised girl students to pursue for higher studies as education was the only ladder which could help them in achieving their dreams. Education was their real wealth which would never end, rather increase with the passage of time, she said.

Charts prepared by students were displayed and all participants were appreciated by the principal.
