Students, teachers a confused lot

By ending the continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) grading system, the CBSE has put Class X students and the teachers in a state of confusion.

With the board exams commencing on March 5, teachers and principals of the schools believe that the decision will impact the pass percentage.

Police DAV School Principal Rashmi Vij, said, “ The CCE was brought just because it was a better grading system and there used to be 100 per cent results, but now, results are likely to see some major changes. The decision to chuck out the CCE system is very abrupt, the teachers and students both are in stress thinking it should not affect students marks. Bringing in annual system at such a short notice has created havoc among students as they need to score passing marks in all compulsory subjects or else they will be left behind.

However, the school is arranging extra classes for students, who are weak in certain subjects.” Also, there is the same amount of pressure on parents who are spending their nights and days with children, helping them out in their studies,” she added.

Deepa Dogra, principal of Eklavya School, said: “Students are perplexed because they were used to the CCE system. Due to the changes in the evaluation system, the ratio between internal and external assessment has been changed completely. Students are in fear and ask the teachers if their answer would be a little different from others, will they lose marks?”

Dogra further said, “The decision will boost rote learning and discourage creativity a student puts in his or her answers.”

A student of Class X, Charanpreet Singh, said, “I and my friends daily discuss over phone how to attempt the paper or how would be the checking this time. Earlier, our school teachers use to check the answer sheet but now the system has changed. We are just hoping that all of us get good marks and clear all the subjects, I feel the CCE system was much better as it used to have many objective type questions which was less time consuming and easy to attempt.”

The change

It is now necessary for students to secure 33 per cent marks out of 80 in every subject as part of external assessment and 33 per cent marks in every subject as part of the internal assessment. Earlier, under the CCE system, students were evaluated semester wise and not much preference was given to marks.
